It has come to our attention that some issues arose regarding disability access to the parade celebrations in Yagan Square. We thank everyone who has contacted us directly to provide feedback on this issue. This feedback greatly assist us to ensure any issues are addressed in future events.

We would like to confirm that it was not and never has been PrideWA’s intention to exclude any part of our community. We are one community and PrideWA actively promoted this with the 2018 theme “Together”. Having consulted with our contractors, we now understand that some parade entrants were asked to wait before entering Yagan Square while an appropriate universally accessible area was created. Unfortunately, this was not communicated well and resulted in these entrants feeling like they were being excluded from the festivities. We apologies to anyone who has felt excluded due to this miscommunication

Through the Parade, Afterparty and other Pride Festival events we aimed to create a sense of safety and inclusion for all members of the community.  We were glad to see everyone proudly marching in the Parade and note that there were multiple people in wheelchairs in Yagan Square and the Afterparty. There were a number of lessons learned on how to improve accessibility throughout the Parade route and other related areas.

Pride WA has a plan to further develop a policy of inclusion for people with disabilities to participate in Pride related event in 2019 and beyond.  We welcome public feedback to ensure that it is inclusive for anyone wanting to take part and thank all individuals and organisation that have already provided assistance and guidance in this area. Please send any feedback or comments to pride@pridewa.com.au
