About

The first Pride March occurred on 20th October 1990. 200 Members of the Stonewall Union of Students, that went on to become Pride WA, rallied from Supreme Court Gardens, up through James St and then into the Cultural Centre. This was the first anniversary of the 1989 Parliament House Rally where 300 people protested laws discriminating against gay men, and that led to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1990. The first Pride events were acts of defiance against systemic violence, discrimination and exclusion. Pride was born from the courage of those who risked everything to demand freedom and dignity.

35 years have passed, and we reflect on the parade’s highlights and history in this free panel discussion, hearing directly from members of our LGBTQIA+ community that were there.
